Boc-D-homophenylalanine is a potent and selective inhibitor of the bacterial efflux pump. It is an enantiomer in which the D-form has greater potency than the L-form, and it is more potent than ciprofloxacin, one of the most common fluoroquinolones. This compound has been shown to inhibit efflux pumps in gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. Boc-D-homophenylalanine also inhibits efflux pumps in gram negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The structure of this drug resembles that of peptidomimetics, which are compounds that have amino acid sequences similar to those found naturally in proteins. Boc-D-homophenylalanine is chiral, meaning it can exist as either a right or left enantiomer. As with many other
