Description:

Boc-3-cyano-L-phenylalanine is a covalent antibiotic that inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to glutathione, an important cellular antioxidant. It has been shown to be effective against tuberculosis, and may be used as a potential treatment for infections caused by this bacterium. Boc-3-cyano-L-phenylalanine is not active against bacteria without glutathione, such as MRSA. The drug also has an irreversible inactivation mechanism that prevents it from being reactivated once it is bound to the glutathione molecule. The drug's uptake into cells is dependent on the millimolar concentration of the drug in solution, which can be achieved through intravenous administration.
