Benzoyl-L-tyrosine 4-nitroanilide is a protease inhibitor that prevents the action of trypsin, chymotrypsin, and other proteases. It has been shown to inhibit the enzyme activity of these proteases in vitro by competitive inhibition. This compound also inhibits the activity of proteinases, including serine proteases, which are involved in inflammatory responses. Benzoyl-L-tyrosine 4-nitroanilide has been used as a diagnostic agent to identify trypsin inhibitors in plant physiology and as an inhibitor for the study of enzyme kinetics.
