Boc-Phe-Gly-OH is a homogenous mixture of three amino acids that are hydrophobic. It is used in vitro studies as a substrate for butyric acid production by immobilized cells. The reaction rate of this product with organic solvents is slow, so it is not suitable for use in the synthesis of organic compounds. However, Boc-Phe-Gly-OH can be allylated and caproic acid can be obtained from this process. This compound has been shown to be sustainable and can be immobilized on an inert support material.
