N-alpha-Boc-L-asparagine N-hydroxysuccinimide ester (NLA) is a methyl ester that is easily hydrolyzed to form the biologically active amino acid, L-asparagine. It has been shown to inhibit cancer cell proliferation and reduce bone resorption. The structure of NLA can be modified by the addition of triflates or tripeptides to give it a greater range of activity. This modification can be done in order to increase the specificity for tumor cells or decrease side effects such as t-cell proliferation. The mechanism of action for NLA is not yet fully understood, but it may be due to its ability to bind tyrosine kinase enzymes and prevent their activation by ATP.
