Boc-D-alanine methyl ester is a chiral compound that is used as a substrate in kinetic studies of enzymes with lactamase activity. It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of gramicidin synthetase and ion channels and also inhibits the formation of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Boc-D-alanine methyl ester is stereoselective, which means it can only react with one enantiomer of the enzyme substrate. The hydroxymethyl group on the D-alanine molecule allows for this selectivity by reacting preferentially with the amino group on the enzyme's peptide bond.
