3-Bromo-L-phenylalanine (3BP) is a hydrophobic amino acid that can be synthesized in the laboratory. It has been shown to interact with glutamate residues, which are found in proteins and enzymes. 3BP is used to circumvent drug resistance in cancer cells by inhibiting the interaction of cetuximab with its receptor, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). 3BP also interacts with histidine residues, which are found in bacterial proteins and enzymes. This interaction inhibits the synthesis of proteins and consequently causes cell death. 3BP has been used as a building block for the synthesis of new architectures and structures of biomolecules that are difficult to obtain through other methods. These advances have led to more efficient drug design for anticancer agents.
