3-Benzothienyl-D-beta-homoalanine hydrochloride (BTHA) is a synthetic amino acid that is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other organic compounds. It can be alkylated with formaldehyde to produce 3-(benzothien-3-yl)-L-alanine, which is then aminated to produce 3-(benzothien-3-yl)-D-aminoacetic acid. BTHA has been shown to react with chloroform, nitrosobenzene, and acylnitroso to form the corresponding benzothiazole derivatives. This reaction proceeds via a hydroxamic acid intermediate. BTHA also undergoes dehydration with sulfides or thiols to give the corresponding thiophene derivatives.
