1-(1H-1,2,3-benzotriazol-1-yl)acetone (BTA) is a reactive chemical that has the potential to form covalent bonds with proteins and nucleic acids. BTA is activated by heat and can be used in the synthesis of a number of indole analogues. Kinetic studies have shown that the elimination reaction of BTA is first order in both reactants. The thermolysis of BTA produces 1,2,3-triazole and acetone. The molecular structure of BTA consists of two fused benzene rings with an attached nitrogen atom at one end and an acetone group on the other. It is stable at room temperature but will decompose when heated to high temperatures or subjected to prolonged exposure to light.
BTA was developed as a chemical intermediate for pharmaceuticals such as antihistamines, steroids, and analgesics.
