5-Benzothiazolamine hydrochloride (5BZT) is an apoptotic inducer that belongs to the class of anilines. It inhibits the phosphorylation of a protein kinase domain, leading to programmed cell death. The apoptotic effect of 5BZT has been shown in studies with rats and humans. Treatment with 5BZT reduced infarct size, which may be due to its ability to inhibit TNF-α production, in addition to its direct effect on mitochondria. A red shift was observed in 5BZT-treated cells, which indicates a decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential and increased free radical production. Clinical trials are currently underway for this drug as a treatment for ischemia/reperfusion injury, but it has not yet been approved for use by the FDA.
