Trans-3-Benzyloxymethylcyclobutanol is a benzyl ether cycloadduct that can be synthesized from allyl and dichloroketene. The compound has been shown to undergo an intramolecular cycloaddition reaction with benzyl, which is catalyzed by the presence of metal ions. These reactions are crystallographically distinct from those observed for other benzyl ethers such as trans-3-benzyloxy-4-methylcyclobutanol. Trans-3-Benzyloxymethylcyclobutanol has also been found to form the benzyl ether in the crystallographic data set. X-ray crystallographic data has shown that this reaction occurs with a 1:1 ratio of reactants and proceeds through a six step process.
