Description

3-(4-Bromobenzoyl)propionic acid (4-BBPA) is an naphthalene derivative that has been shown to have antibacterial activity. 4-BBPA binds to the bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA, inhibiting protein synthesis and leading to cell death. It has been synthesised and expressed in bacteria, as well as being synthesised from a chemical precursor. 4-BBPA can cause apoptosis in human glioblastoma cells by inducing annexin II and releasing cytochrome c from mitochondria. This drug also has chemoresistance properties which may be due to its ability to inhibit the expression of the gene for drug efflux pump PgP.
