4-(2-Boc-aminoethyl)piperidine is a chemical compound that is a lead compound for the design of drugs to treat Alzheimer's disease. It has been shown to have neuroprotective activity against acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme that breaks down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. 4-(2-Boc-aminoethyl)piperidine interacts with the active site of the acetylcholinesterase enzyme, blocking it from breaking down acetylcholine, and thus preventing cognitive decline. This drug also prevents neuronal cell death by scavenging reactive oxygen species and acting as a cholinergic agonist. 4-(2-Boc-aminoethyl)piperidine has also shown multitarget activities in that it inhibits both acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase enzymes, which are responsible for breaking down butyrylcholine.
