4-Bromo-n-butyric acid is an antimicrobial agent that belongs to the group of hydroxylated aromatic hydrocarbons. It is a chemical intermediate that is used in the production of other compounds, such as monoclonal antibodies and cyclic peptides. 4-Bromo-n-butyric acid has been shown to be active against gram negative bacteria, including Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, with low toxicity to mammalian cells. 4-Bromo-n-butyric acid is also used as a fluorescence probe for measuring the concentration of fatty acids in biological samples. The mechanism of action for this compound is not yet well understood but may involve adsorption onto the bacterial cell membrane or by reacting with fatty acids within the cells.
