3-Bromo-4-cyanotoluene is a monomer that can be polymerized to form polyacetylenes. It is an insoluble solid, with a melting point of 136°C. 3-Bromo-4-cyanotoluene reacts with magnesium to form Grignard reagent, which can be used as a catalyst for the polymerization of acetylene. The substituent on the 3 position influences the stability and reactivity of this compound. The rate of polymerization increases when there are more trifluoromethyl groups in the substituent. 3-Bromo-4-cyanotoluene has been shown to act as a transition state analog in polymerizations.
