Description

(R)-1-Benzyl-3-hydroxypiperidine is an asymmetric catalyst that is used in the enantioselective synthesis of aliphatic aldehydes. The catalytic process involves the formation of an iminium ion that reacts with diethylzinc to form an enamine, which then reacts with an aliphatic aldehyde to form the corresponding chiral alcohol. This catalyst can be used for the synthesis of trans-4-hydroxy-l-proline as well as other alcohols. The catalyst has been shown to have high levels of enantioselectivity, and is useful for the synthesis of chiral compounds from inexpensive starting materials.
