Boc-O-benzyl-D-beta-homoserine is a lactam antibiotic that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of bacterial infections. It inhibits β-glucosidase and other enzymes, which are involved in the synthesis of lactic acid. Boc-O-benzyl-D-beta-homoserine is an acidic compound that binds to both phosphine and protein targets, inhibiting the production of lactic acid by preventing the conversion of pyruvic acid into lactic acid. Boc-O-benzyl-D-beta-homoserine does not inhibit any mammalian enzymes, making it a nonhormonal contraceptive drug. This agent can also be used to treat bacterial infections caused by Clostridium perfringens and Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
