N-Butylphthalimide is a chemical compound that is produced by the reaction of butylamine with phthalic anhydride. It has been used in the manufacture of organic compounds such as quaternary ammonium salts, amides, and benzoates. The rate of reaction between N-butylphthalimide and potassium sulfate can be increased by using magnesium as a catalyst. This chemical has also been shown to be useful in the production of calcium stearate. The reaction mechanism is thought to involve chloride ions, which are formed by hydrolysis when water reacts with the phthalic anhydride.
