N-Benzyl-6-chloro-4-pyrimidinamine is a natural product that has been shown to be an electrophilic agent. It inhibits the maturation of erythrocytes in clinical trials, and can be used to treat infections caused by bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotics. N-Benzyl-6-chloro-4-pyrimidinamine has been shown to act as a competitive inhibitor of activated formaldehyde. The compound is oxidized by nitrous acid and formamide, which may account for its activity against Gram negative bacteria.
The compound is synthesized by reacting benzaldehyde with pyridine in the presence of formamide and a catalytic amount of nitrous acid. The reaction optimizes at an elevated temperature (100 °C) and produces the desired product in good yield.
