N-Benzylquinidinium chloride is an antihistamine that interacts with the H1 receptor. It is synthesized by a reaction between quinine and benzaldehyde, followed by the dehydrogenative coupling of 2-aminoterephthalic acid. The synthesis process begins with the Friedel-Crafts reaction of benzene and chloroacetone to form an intermediate, which undergoes an intramolecular cyclisation to produce N-benzylquinidinium chloride. This compound also has antihistaminic activity and has been tested in humans for its ability to relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis.
