Tert-butyl L-pyroglutamate is a ligand that binds to the purinergic receptor P2X7. It is used in research to study the molecular imaging of inflammation in animals and humans. Tert-butyl L-pyroglutamate binds to the receptor subtype P2X7, which is involved in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease. This compound has been shown to have affinity for other receptors, such as P2Y1 and P2Y6. Tert-butyl L-pyroglutamate has also been used in radiology for labeling and optimizing radiopharmaceuticals for amide proton transfer agents.
