N-tert-Butylbenzenesulfenamide is a labile, gaseous, industrial additive that is used in the process of polymerization. It has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of tumor xenografts and abdominal adenocarcinomas. In vitro studies have shown that N-tert-butylbenzenesulfenamide inhibits β-unsaturated ketones and aldehydes from forming malonic acid. This inhibition prevents DNA synthesis and protein production in tumor cells, which leads to cell death. The chloride ion is essential for this reaction as it acts as a base to deprotonate the nitrogen atom on the sulfenamide group. The reaction time between N-tert-butylbenzenesulfenamide and these compounds is important for this inhibition to occur.
