Description

Butylurea is a denaturing agent that is used in tissue culture and as a contraceptive. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells by interfering with the synthesis of DNA. This drug also has a benzalkonium chloride-like effect, which is due to its ability to denature proteins by forming hydrogen bonds with nitrogen atoms on protein molecules. The hydrogen bonds will break down the protein's tertiary structure, thereby inhibiting its functions. Butylurea is water-soluble and can be used to denature other water-soluble drugs such as pyrimidine compounds. However, it cannot be used on non-polar substances because it does not dissolve in oil or fat.
