4-Butylbenzaldehyde is an organic compound with the formula CH3C6H4CHO. It is a colorless liquid that smells like bitter almond oil. 4-Butylbenzaldehyde is used in the synthesis of cinnamic acid derivatives and as an insecticide. It has been shown to be a noncompetitive inhibitor of malonic acid decarboxylase, which catalyzes the conversion of malonic acid to succinic acid. 4-Butylbenzaldehyde also has inhibitory activity against acetic acid hydrolase, which catalyzes the conversion of acetate to water and carbon dioxide. This property may be due to its ability to bind to the enzyme active site and change its shape, preventing it from functioning properly.
