It is an important supramolecular building block with a cavity that can accommodate metal ions, ligands, and other molecules. Under certain conditions, the 4-tert-butylsulfonylcalix[4]arene can form tetranuclear clusters or mononuclear complexes. The 4-tert-butylsulfonylcalix[4]arene molecule has also been shown to have magnetic properties and forms crystals in the tetragonal crystal system. X-ray diffraction studies have revealed the conformational changes in the 4-tert-butylsulfonylcalix[4]arene molecule when it binds to ligands and metal ions.
