Bis(4-formylphenyl)phenylamine is a molecule that fluoresces brightly in the near-ultraviolet region. It is synthesized by heating chlorobenzene and aniline in a sealed tube. This reaction produces a red solution with chlorobenzene and phenylamine as major products. Purification by sublimation removes the solvents and unwanted impurities from the product. Bis(4-formylphenyl)phenylamine has been used to prepare fluorescent devices for use in analytical instruments and for laboratory experimentation, such as the determination of protein concentration. The fluorescence intensity is proportional to the number of carbonyl groups present on the molecule. It has also been used to generate luminescence, which can be measured using devices that detect fluorescence or phosphorescence (i.e., chemiluminescence). The tetrahydrofuran solvent used in this process has been shown to react with carbonyl
