Bis[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]methane is a reactive chemical that is used in pharmaceutical preparations. It is also used to remove nitrogen from wastewater, and has been shown to have a toxic effect on the papillary muscle of the heart. Bis[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]methane reacts with active methylene groups in organic acids, forming an intermediate which then undergoes transfer reactions with nucleotides. This reaction is part of the mechanism by which this chemical prevents DNA synthesis and induces cell death. Bis[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]methane has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria such as typhimurium, although it does not bind to DNA or RNA. Bis[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]methane binds to proteins and inhibits protein synthesis by binding to transfer-RNA molecules that are involved in cellular protein synthesis.>>END>>
