Bis(4-nitrophenyl) sulfide is a yellow solid that belongs to the class of sulfoxides. It has a molecular weight of 250.87 and chemical formula C12H10N2O3S. It is soluble in water, ether, and benzene. Bis(4-nitrophenyl) sulfide is used as an intermediate for pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and dye intermediates. It has been shown to react with chloride ions to form the molecule bis(4-chlorophenyl) sulfide. The second order rate constant is 5×10 cm/s at 25°C.
Bis(4-nitrophenyl) sulfide can also be used as a radical scavenger due to its ability to capture free radicals such as peroxides. This reaction leads to the formation of diphenyl ether (DPE). DPE can then undergo hydrogen bonding with other molecules or atoms in solution, which makes it useful in organic synthesis
