Bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl] sulfone is a diphenyl ether with two phenol groups. It is an organometallic compound that has been shown to inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells in tissue cultures. Bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl] sulfone binds to fatty acids, which are important for the transport of this drug through cell membranes. The sodium formate is converted to bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl] sulfone by hydrolysis and then transported into the cell, where it reacts with the biphenyl group on the cell surface to form a polymerized compound. This polymerized compound inhibits the catalytic mechanism of cancer cells, leading to death of these cells. Bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl] sulfone also has been shown to be effective against human cancer cells in culture and may be used for cancer therapy and cancer profiling.
