9-Benzoylcarbazole (9BC) is a carbazole that has been shown to have cancer cell-killing properties. It is synthesized by the reaction of benzaldehyde and acetic acid followed by an oxidation reaction with potassium permanganate. 9BC is activated by light, leading to its fluorescence, which can be used in photodynamic therapy.
