2,4'-Bipyridyl is a heterocyclic compound that has the chemical formula C6H2N2. It is an insoluble solid that can be prepared by reacting pyridine with 2,4-dichloro-1,3,5-triazine in a sulfate solution. This reaction yields a mixture of two isomeric compounds: 2,4'-bipyridyl and 2,6'-bipyridyl. The functional theory of these compounds states that they are both electron donors and acceptors due to the presence of two nitrogen atoms. The bipyridine ion has been shown to form complexes with metal ions such as copper(II) or zinc(II). These complexes have been used for surface-enhanced raman spectroscopy and dianions for use in coordination chemistry. The bipyridine ion also forms hydrogen bonds between water molecules on opposite sides of the molecule.
