Butyltrichlorosilane is a molecular compound with the chemical formula (CH3)3SiCl2. It is a colorless liquid that is miscible with water and most organic solvents. Butyltrichlorosilane has been used as a solvent for cellulose esters and polyvinyl chloride, as well as a component in detergent compositions. The viscosity of butyltrichlorosilane can be increased by reacting it with an acid or base in a reaction vessel. The molecule crystallizes into an orthorhombic structure that can be identified using X-ray diffraction techniques. Cationic surfactants are often used to produce stable monolayers on the surface of butyltrichlorosilane when it is used as a solid catalyst. Kinetic energy also plays a role in the formation of these monolayers by affecting the rate of diffusion of cationic surfactant molecules to the surface
