1-Butanethiol is an organic compound that has been used as a sensor for detecting the presence of electron transfer agents. 1-Butanethiol reacts with phosphorus pentoxide to form a fluorescent derivative that can be detected by optical sensors in the presence of light. It is also used as a reagent for the detection of disulfide bonds in proteins and enzymes, and it participates in mercaptan formation with other thiols. The reaction mechanism of 1-butanethiol with oxygen is believed to involve electron transfer from sulfur atoms to oxygen, forming a radical intermediate. This radical can react with another molecule of 1-butanethiol or another hydrogen atom to form two molecules of methyl ethyl sulfide (CH3SCH3).
