This reaction proceeds via the intramolecular cyclization of an intermediate called hydroxylamine chloride. The cyclization is catalyzed by palladium and proceeds through a series of steps where the substituents on the ring are gradually removed. This process results in a five membered ring with two bromine atoms at opposite positions on the ring, which gives it its name.
