2-Bromo-6-methyl-4-nitropyridine was synthesized by esterification of the acid group of 2,2'-dibromoacetophenone with an acetyl moiety. The resultant ester is a water soluble compound with a molecular weight of 190.09 and an empirical formula of C9H7BrNO5. This compound has photophysical properties that can be used in the development of organic materials for use in biomedical applications such as biomolecular enhancement. The esterification reaction was carried out using reagents such as potassium hydroxide, sodium ethoxide and potassium tert-butoxide.
