Benzyltriethoxysilane is a polymer film cross-linking agent that is used in cationic polymerization reactions. It reacts with hydroxyl groups on the surface of metal and forms an Si-O-Si bond. This product has been shown to be reactive with human serum and can be used as a coating for medical devices. The use of benzyltriethoxysilane as a coating on contact lenses has been shown to reduce the risk of eye infections by microorganisms such as Staphylococcus aureus, which can cause corneal ulcers. Benzyltriethoxysilane can also be used as an optical sensor for hydrogen fluoride gas. It changes from yellow to colorless when it reacts with hydrogen fluoride gas.
