2,5-Bis[(trimethylsilyl)ethynyl]thiophene is a cyclic trimethylsilylacetylene with a constant ring size. It has been shown to be a ligand for the nickel center in bis(cycloocta-1,5-diene)nickel dithiolate. This compound exhibits redox potentials and voltammetry that are related to its carbonyl group. 2,5-Bis[(trimethylsilyl)ethynyl]thiophene can be desilyated using fluoride or other techniques to reveal its molecular structure. The compound has a potential as an electrode material for thermally activated currents because of its high thermal stability at higher temperatures.
