Bromoacetyl chloride is a diphenyl ether that can be used as a diagnostic agent to detect serine protease in tissue. It also has acylation activity and can be used in the synthesis of β-amino acids. Bromoacetyl chloride is used in cancer research, where it may inhibit tumor growth by binding to DNA, causing DNA chain breaks and inhibiting protein synthesis. This drug also has anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. The carbonyl group on bromoacetyl chloride can react with hydroxyl groups on proteins or nucleic acids, leading to light emission.
