1,4-Bis(chlorodifluoromethyl)benzene is a monomer that can be used in the production of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). It can be synthesized by refluxing tetrahydrofuran with chlorine and adding azobisisobutyronitrile as a polymerization initiator. The reaction time for this process should be at least 20 hours. This monomer is then transferred to a reaction solution and irradiated with gamma radiation or electron beams. Hexamethylphosphoramide is then added to the reaction solution, which causes carbon tetrachloride to form as a byproduct. A fluoride compound is also formed during this process, which acts synergistically with the monomer.
