Benzyl fluoride is a reactive gas with an unpleasant odor. It is used as a chemical intermediate and solvent, as well as in the manufacture of other chemicals. In addition, benzyl fluoride is also used in the production of polyurethane elastomers and as a starting material for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals. Benzyl fluoride reacts with amines to form N-benzylpiperidinium salts that are useful in organic syntheses. The reaction mechanism starts by protonating the phenol group on benzyl alcohol to yield the benzylic cation followed by nucleophilic attack on an amine to generate a quaternary ammonium salt. Benzyl fluoride reacts with hydroxide ion to form hydrogen fluoride (HF) and benzylic alcohol. This chemical property makes it a good choice for use in bowel disease treatments, because it can help relieve constipation caused by gut motility problems or lack of stool bulkiness due to bowel injury or surgery.
