Dichloroplatinum (II) is a bidentate ligand that binds to DNA and inhibits the synthesis of RNA and protein by binding to the enzyme DNA topoisomerase II. This compound has been shown to have an antitumor effect in vitro on MCF-7 cells. Dichloroplatinum (II) was found to be more effective than cisplatin, as it showed no toxicity in mice. It also had no adverse effects on the liver, kidneys, or central nervous system. The mechanism of action for dichloroplatinum (II) is similar to cisplatin but differs in that it is not converted into reactive metabolites by cytochrome P450 enzymes.
