Methyl[methyl(oxo)phenyl-λ6-sulfanylidene]amine is a synthetic chiral sulfoxide that has been used as a reagent in organic synthesis. It can be prepared from methyl[methyl(oxo)phenyl-λ6-sulfanylidene]acetate, which is obtained by the reaction of an epoxide with a sulfide. This compound can react with iodides and chlorides to form diastereoisomers, and can be purified by chromatography. The optical rotation of methyl[methyl(oxo)phenyl-λ6-sulfanylidene]amine is +12° (c=1 in methanol). Methyl[methyl(oxo)phenyl-λ6-sulfanylidene]amine has been shown to be an analog for other compounds, such as ethylbenzene.
