Product Information

Name:
8-Methylhypoxanthine
Synonyms:
  • 8-methyl-5,9-dihydro-6H-purin-6-one
  • 6H-Purin-6-One,1,7-Dihydro-8-Methyl-
Description:

8-Methylhypoxanthine is a purine derivative that is used in the production of other purines and xanthines. 8-Methylhypoxanthine can be synthesized by refluxing hypoxanthine with formaldehyde. It has two tautomeric forms, alloxanthine and xanthine. The semiempirical method was used to determine the binding of 8-methylhypoxanthine to xanthine oxidase. The chloride ion was found to interact with 8-methylhypoxanthine, which may be due to the high electronegativity of the chloride ion. The stable tautomers are an important factor for this compound because they allow it to exist in both its alloxanthine and xanthine forms, which makes it more versatile than an alloxanhrine molecule that only exists as one form.
