5-Chloro-2-methyl benzothiazole is a monomeric dye that binds to serum albumin. It has been used as a probe for the detection of human serum albumin in urine samples. 5-Chloro-2-methyl benzothiazole is also used as a linker in the preparation of polymers and in the production of high molecular weight polymers, such as polyethylene glycols. The compound can be used to detect chlorine by reacting with it and forming a blue color. 5-Chloro-2-methyl benzothiazole can be recrystallized from piperidine or disassembled into its monomeric form, which is useful for dyeing fabrics.
