3-Chlorophenol is a phenolic compound that is used as a preservative in agriculture and as an intermediate in the synthesis of other chemicals. 3-Chlorophenol has been shown to have synergistic effects with hydroxylated compounds in wastewater treatment. It can be used for the removal of phenolic acids from water by means of ion exchange or adsorption. 3-Chlorophenol is also used as a starting material for diazonium salts, which are important intermediates in the synthesis of dyes, photographic chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. The reaction mechanism for this compound begins with the formation of a copper complex. This complex can then react with hydrogen peroxide to form an activated species (hydroxyl radical) that reacts with nitrous acid to form a reactive nitrogen species (nitroxide). The nitroxide reacts with the aromatic ring, displacing chloride and releasing hydroxyl groups to form 3-chlorophenol.
