2-Chloro-6-phenyl pyridine is a nucleophilic substitution product of 2,6-dichloropyridine and phenylmagnesium bromide. It is synthesized from biphenyl and chloroacetophenone. This compound can be used as a coating for surfaces to retard the corrosion of metals by water or other substances. 2-Chloro-6-phenyl pyridine has been found to have cytostatic effects on organisms such as nematodes and fruit flies. The mechanism of action is not yet known, but it may involve an inhibitory effect on DNA synthesis.
