(R)-4-Chloromandelic acid is a chiral, crystalline solid that is soluble in alcohols, ethers, and chlorinated solvents. It can be used in the industrial production of (S)-mandelic acid by alkalinizing mandelonitrile with sodium hydroxide. The product can be filtered and recrystallized to yield purified (R)-4-chloromandelic acid. This compound is also an optical antipode of the more common (S)-mandelic acid.
