(+)-2-Carene is an α-pinene, a monoterpene that is found in many plants. It has been shown to have antimicrobial properties against the yeast Cryptococcus neoformans. It is also used as a chinese medicinal herb for the treatment of respiratory tract infections. (+)-2-Carene has been shown to inhibit β-amino acid production and induce lipid peroxidation in Candida glabrata, a fungus that causes oral candidiasis. The mechanism of this inhibition is not yet known, but it may be due to its ability to react with water vapor or fatty acids on the fungal cell surface.
