Description

cis-Cyclooctene is a reactive, thermodynamically unstable molecule that can be oxidized to cyclooctene by exposure to the air. It has been shown that cis-cyclooctene is a precursor to cyclooctene in reactions catalyzed by copper oxide or peroxydisulfate. The oxidation reaction of cis-cyclooctene yields chloride as a product and is favored at lower pressures. This compound has also been used as a model system for the study of molecular orbital theory and the mechanism of chemical reactions. Cis-Cyclooctene is not soluble in water, but can be dissolved in solvents such as trifluoroacetic acid.
