Chloromethanesulfonyl chloride (CMSCl) is a potent inhibitor of cholesterol ester transfer protein that is used to treat autoimmune diseases, cancer, and inflammatory diseases. It inhibits the synthesis of pyrimidine compounds in the body, which are essential for DNA replication. The mechanism of action of CMSCl involves the addition of a hydroxyl group to its substrate. This reaction leads to an intermediate product called trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). TFA then reacts with a second molecule of CMsCl, forming an active intermediate called a quinoline derivative. This compound binds to the cholesterol ester transfer protein, inhibiting its activity and thereby preventing the production of lipids such as cholesterol and fatty acids.
